Are journalists being watched?

May 18, 2018
We are, according to a report in Forbes:

The United States government, traditionally one of the bastions of press freedom, is about to compile a list of professional journalists and “top media influencers,” … and monitor what they’re putting out to the public.

And that’s not all.  Forbes goes on.Last October, an Indiana lawmaker proposed that journalists be licensed. Representative Jim Lucas’s bill was mostly a publicity stunt, but could this DHS action be a way for the government to keep track of American and foreign journalists as well as “citizen journalists,” threatening not only the freedom of the press but also individual freedom of speech?

Because of these things — and what’s being called the “Trump Effect,”  Reporters without Borders just dropped the US to 45th out of 180 nations in its annual “Press Freedom Ranking.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security which issued the request for “Media Monitoring Services,” tweeted that “despite what some reporters may suggest,” this is “standard.”

“Any suggestion otherwise is fit for tin foil hat wearing, black helicopter conspiracy theorists,” wrote spokesman Tyler Q. Houlton.
