The United States government, traditionally one of the bastions of press freedom, is about to compile a list of professional journalists and “top media influencers,” … and monitor what they’re putting out to the public.
Because of these things — and what’s being called the “Trump Effect,” Reporters without Borders just dropped the US to 45th out of 180 nations in its annual “Press Freedom Ranking.”
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security which issued the request for “Media Monitoring Services,” tweeted that “despite what some reporters may suggest,” this is “standard.”
“Any suggestion otherwise is fit for tin foil hat wearing, black helicopter conspiracy theorists,” wrote spokesman Tyler Q. Houlton.
